Salary gap: speaker bios

Suzy Astbury is Managing Director of the industry’s leading Publishing recruitment agency, Inspired Search & Selection.

After studying Media and Theatre at University, Suzy launched her career in publishing. She was a PA to a board of directors at the Quarto Group. Following this she moved within the group into a Sales & Marketing role for the children’s imprint, QED. She then moved into foreign rights at Michael O’Mara before changing careers into publishing recruitment.

Suzy now owns and runs leading publishing recruitment agency, Inspired Selection. She uses her own experience of working in publishing along with her fantastic network to help candidates from the beginning of their careers all the way up to appointing the next CEOs at the top of the companies in publishing today.

Suzy is excited to join the panel at this special Women in Publishing talk, to discuss the “Salary Pay Gap” and how we can help influence any indirect or direct discrimination around this topic.

Suzanne Collier has been researching publishing salaries for over 20 years, through the bookcareers.com Salary Survey.

Fully qualified in Career Guidance and Development, she works with both individuals and companies to help solve career problems, including job-seeking, productivity and redundancy. This year she has been nominated in the IPG Awards, for Services to Publishing and in the CDI Awards for research.

Suzanne has spent a lifetime working in both trade and academic publishing, working across all departments and her passion for publishing careers has enabled her to write a book, How to Job Search in Book Publishing, which will be published by the newly-launched bookcareers publishing imprint later in the year.

She is often outspoken about publishing issues, was one of the first to condemn unpaid internships, and continues to tackle publishers head-on about unfair practices within the industry.

Her outstanding and significant contribution to publishing was recognised by Women in Publishing in 2011, when she won the Pandora Award.

Helen Kogan has worked for Kogan Page since 2000 following a career in journalism specialising in work-related topics.

She has been Managing Director since 2006. She has served on the Publishers Association Council, the North East London Advisory Board of Young Enterprise, a charity supporting business projects and education in schools, and is currently on the Advisory Board of the London Book Fair. Kogan Page has been short-listed for both the IPG and British Book Awards Professional and Academic Publisher of the Year categories for the past two years.

Charlotte Hussein is Director, Human Resources at Wiley, with responsibility for the UK.

She is a member of Wiley UK’s Gender Pay Gap Steering Group which has been examining the causes of the company’s gap and what can be done to resolve it.
