Events 2008

Meetings are currently held at the University Women’s Club in South Audley Street, Mayfair, at 7pm.

Wed 12 October
Museum publishing - Behind the scenes at the museum

Our two speakers, from the British Musuem and National Gallery will share their wealth of experience in this field.

Nina Shandloff from the British Museum will look at the editorial side including commissioning, relationships with authors and the list. Louise Rice from the National Gallery will focus more on the business and strategic side including retail and web. They will also explore the differences between the two organisations in terms of art and archaeological publishing.

Nina Shandloff has been a Senior Commissioning Editor at British Museum Press since 1989, responsible for all types of books from museum guides, exhibition catalogues and general illustrated books to scholarly publications covering archaeology, art and world cultures. Prior to the BM, Nina worked as an editor in illustrated adult trade publishing in London since arriving from the USA in 1973, and was involved in Women in Publishing, especially training, for over ten years, for which she received WiP’s Pandora award.

Louise Rice has been at the National Gallery since August 2007 and as Publishing & Merchandise Director since July 2008 and when the two departments were brought together. The NG houses one of the greatest collections of Western European painting in the world. These pictures belong to the public and entrance to see them is free. Prior to the NG, Louise worked in the UK, Australia and the US across educational, trade and online publishing.
